A guide to buying on Gumroad

What is Gumroad?

Gumroad is a service for creators to sell their work. We host their files, process their payments, and deliver their files to their customers. So, when your credit card statement or PayPal dashboard shows "Gumroad" payments, that just means you've supported a creator who uses Gumroad!

By accepting the majority of credit cards and PayPal, we make things as easy as possible for you and the Gumroad creators you are supporting.

**Banks typically have strict rules regarding online purchases with debit cards, since debit cards do not offer chargeback protection. If you plan on using a debit card, please verify with your bank before you make your purchase that they allow online transactions.

Is Gumroad safe?

In a word, yes.

Do I need to have a Gumroad account to buy products?

Nope! We want things to be as simple as possible for you, so just pay for the product and be done with it. We will send you an email receipt that has the link to your content in it. 

If you want to create an account after the purchase, in order to access your files, you can do that here. Be sure to sign up with the email address you used to buy the products. If you have bought products with multiple email addresses, simply use one of them and email us at support. We can send over the products from the other email address(es) for you.

Profile vs Product pages

Do you see multiple products, a creator's description of themselves, and a profile picture? This means you're on a Gumroad creator's profile page:

To buy products from a profile page, simply click the desired products and you will get a more detailed description of the product, and maybe multiple options to choose from. 

The example below features a Membership product where you can get content from a creator on a regular basis. (in this example, by paying monthly)

Like what you see? Click the "Buy" (one-time payment) or "Subscribe" (recurring subscription to a Membership) button!

Highlighted Membership

Creators sometimes highlight a Membership they are offering. You can see this by clicking the Membership icon button, next to the Products button:

If you are on a product page, you will just see a buy button - in this case, it says "I want this!" Click that to go to the checkout page:

Understanding the Payment Form

Feast your eyes upon this hearty, multifaceted payment form. So many boxes! A pastiche of grey hues, ornery right angles, and options a-plenty! What can be made of this? Let's deconstruct it, Doctorate in Literature style.

Your email address - This was either bestowed upon you at birth (if you live in North Korea), created when you were in high school and despite its embarrassing connotations maintained for convenience's sake, or something your boss gave you on your first day at work. Either way, this is where you will receive a receipt, invoice, and download link for the product you buy.

Gifting - See the toggle here? You can click this to send this product to a friend. This will send the receipt to you, but the product to your friend. Read more here. Keep in mind, you currently cannot gift memberships.

Discount code* - You may not see this box if it's not turned on for this product. A discount code is a discount that the creator of this product may or may not have advertised. If you know of one to enter, enter it into the discount code box. Wait for a maximum of 3 seconds to see the price change.

Mailed To* - If the product you are looking at is displaying this field, you need to enter your shipping address. If your country does not have ZIP Codes (and most don't) simply enter your Postal Code.

Card Number - This is what it's all been building up to: entering those sweet, sweet credit card digits. Depending on the policies of your credit card provider, you may be asked for more information to ensure that your purchase is not fraudulent. 

Business VAT ID* - You can also enter a valid VAT ID if you're in the EU / UK to get a refund for the VAT. You will also be able to refund the VAT through the link in your receipt. If our system detects your IP address to be outside of the EU / UK you will not see this on your checkout form and you will not be able to refund the VAT to yourself, because you will not have paid any VAT.

* You may or may not see this field, depending on what kind of product it is, where you are or how the creator set it up.

If the stars are aligned for you today, your purchase should go through in one beautifully simple transaction. If not, then here are a few...

Common Errors

If you do not fill in all the fields of your payment form, they will appear highlighted in green, and prohibit you from proceeding. However, there may be something else amiss.

Payment processing is migraine-inducingly complicated, and there are a number of reasons why payments might not succeed on the first try. For more information, see this article. Briefly though, you may be blocked for one of the following reasons:

CVC Code: If you enter the wrong CVC code, your payment will not process. Make sure all your credit card details are correct before clicking "pay."

Zip code verification:You may find a pop-up window asking you for your "zip code." When this happens, your credit card provider is communicating with our processing engine, asking us to verify that you are in fact the person using this card. If you don't live in the United States, enter your Postal Code without any spaces. For example, BH13 6BD should be entered as BH136BD.

Provider Policies: If you don't receive a specific error message, your credit card provider may be blocking your purchase from finalizing. Usually a quick call to them will solve this. Just ask them to "whitelist" Gumroad.com, and attempt your purchase again.

Discount codes (optionally displayed)

To reiterate, at the checkout screen, you may see a box appear where you can enter a discount code. If you are aware of a discount code that this creator has advertised, enter that now, wait a maximum of 3 seconds for the price to change. You'll see the new price just above the 'Pay' button.

After a Successful Purchase

You will see a success message and your receipt will be emailed to you. 

Double check the email address here. Did you misspell your email address? Then copy the wrong email address and send us an email at support, letting us know the misspelled email and to which email address the product should be send to. If you don't know the misspelled email address, don't worry. We have other ways of finding your purchase. We will fix it for you.

Enter a password?

After you've bought a product on Gumroad, you can enter a password to Sign up for a Gumroad account. Why would you do this? Because of the Gumroad Library. The Library allows you to access your product at any time by logging into Gumroad. If you are buying a membersip, you have to create a Gumroad account at the time of purchase.

From your Gumroad receipt, you can also easily repurchase a product, download the product, or open it in our iPhone app or Android app.

Accessing your purchase

Most products on Gumroad can be downloaded immediately after your purchase has completed onto a desktop or laptop. In these cases, you would simply click Download or View/Listen/Read/Watch on the download page to enjoy your product. 

You can access that page through your receipt if your product is not immediately accessible.
Here's our Guide to Gumroad Receipts. Every Gumroad receipt has a button or link called "view content" that, when clicked, will send you to a download page for your product. Or, if the creator has set it up that way, the link will take you to an other location where you can access your content. 

We recommend to click this link on your desktop or laptop, as mobile browsers are not built for large downloads.

If you don't see a receipt your email inbox, check your spam box as it may have been filtered incorrectly.

If you do not have a Gumroad account, as long as you keep your Gumroad receipt, with its download link, you will be able to access your file at any time. 

One last time for good measure:

We recommend not trying to download directly to a mobile device. Mobile browsers are not built for downloads yet. Download to a laptop or desktop and sync to your device accordingly.

Accessing Memberships

When you buy a membership on Gumroad, you will automatically create an account with us. This allows you to access your membership's updates through the Library, and allows us to charge your card for all new installments. If you ever wish to cancel your account, click here to learn how to do so.

Leaving a rating

A rating can greatly help out a creator. We all feel better buying a product that has been bought by others and that has been rated well. To rate the product that you bought, go to the product page through the link in your receipt and click the amount of stars you think the product is worth:

Opening .ZIP and .RAR files

Let's face it - we all have problems sometimes, some more embarrassing than others. Fortunately when you buy from Gumroad, your problems are never embarrassing, and there's always someone to help. Here's who to contact when you do run into issues:

Contact the creator of the product if...

  • You don't know what to do with the files you've purchased
  • You have questions, concerns, or feedback regarding the product's content
  • To change an order or inquire about the tracking status of a product
  • To ask for a refund

Contact Gumroad's Support Team if...

  • You are having issues downloading the product
  • You have not received a receipt with a download link to your product yet
